Beginning in 2017 Gulfstream will host the Pegasus World Cup, billed as the 'richest horse race in the world' with a projected purse of $12 million. It is the home of two Grade I races: the Florida Derby, one of the main prep meets for the Kentucky Derby, and the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap.
Opened initially in 1939 and reopened in 1944, Gulfstream conducts racing from December through April. Two places are prominent in Florida's horse-racing universe: Gulfstream and Hialeah.
